Social responsibility

Social responsibility is at the heart of our organisation and by keeping to our governing principles we maintain a strong, socially responsible business strategy. Our commitment to serve the interests of our workforce, the values of health and safety and the welfare of the environment and the wider community, ensures we maintain the very highest standards of practice.

We manage public services (90% of our business) in many different countries but wherever our business takes us, we keep the same values of equal opportunity, trust and dignity. This is because our company depends on attracting, training and motivating the best people. It's how we deliver a great service all over the world.

Wherever we operate, our workforce lives and works within a community, so it's vital our people are proud of the work we do as a business on a local level. This means taking an active role in community projects through fundraising and volunteering which not only creates a positive impact on many people's lives it allows us to foster partnerships and share expertise.

In 2005 the Tsunami united the world in grief. Our response as a company is a great example of our value-based culture in action. Just days after the tragedy we made a substantial donation to the relief effort but it soon became so much more than just fundraising. Concentrating on the devastated island of Sri-Lanka and India, Serco volunteers set about building new homes and teaching new skills to the population. The volunteers included managing directors and bus drivers, scientists and PAs. As one volunteer commented "Job titles were irrelevant. All we needed was the passion, enthusiasm and desire to give something back to people in need."

Working to the values that comprise our idea of social responsibility has given our company, throughout our global operations, the chance to be proud of our past and confident about the future.
